Course “Why translational medicine fails – and what to do about it”vrijdag 15 januari 2016
Awareness, inspiration and training is what this Utrecht University summerschool course offers. Key opinion leaders increase your awareness of how science really works and how this shapes translational medicine. International experts provide you with a behind-the-scenes look at some of translational medicine’s success stories. Excellent teachers will train you to become a successful translational researcher yourself, to make a difference in the field, with ample time for personal coaching and mentoring.
You will be challenged to understand in depth the consequences of the current incentive and reward system in science. In addition to debating the systemic and political perspectives, we will zoom in on the ethical choices individual scientists have to make on a day-to-day basis.
Case studies from pediatrics and orphan diseases are central to the course. For example, you will discuss the fascinating development of organoids, originated in basic stem cell research, that now find clinical relevance in testing drugs for cystic fibrosis. Experienced travelers in translational medicine will show you how to pass the ‘valley of death’. And, of course, society has a voice. Patients and patient organizations will present their views on how to boost translational medicine.
Using a variety of approaches throughout the course, you will develop your skills in leadership, collaboration, communication, resilience, innovation and creativity. These so-called soft skills are crucial to being a successful translational scientist. Also, you will receive a group assignment, to be presented at the end of the week.
